Abby Newton (USA) is a superb cellist who has worked extensively with Scottish music tradition. She has a long career of teaching, education and collaborations with a vast number of musicians from both sides of the Atlantic. Her two solo albums are prime examples of what I like to call “chamber folk”: meticulously arranged and spiritedly performed readings of Scottish and Irish material, the oldest melodies dating back to the 1700’s and still feeling fresh. The Irish Music Magazine wrote of her 1996 album Crossing to Scotland that “…the connections between Irish music and classical Baroque have been increasingly recognized, nowhere better than in this fine collection…” and I totally agree.
