Alasdair Fraser (SCO) is an icon and a giant: a a wonderful performer, inspiring educator and grand ambassador of the Scottish fiddle and Scottish music in general, worldwide. His amazing career began in the late 70’s and very much continues today. Alasdair’s vast discography ranges from solo traditional recordings to electric world music projects (Alasdair Fraser’s Skyedance) and almost anything in between. For the past few years, he has been recording and performing extensively in a duo with cellist Natalie Haas. In every context, that instantly recognizable fiddle sound and Scottish roots ever strongly present. Quite recently a documentary movie, The Groove Is Not Trivial, was made about his relationship to music in general and his travels around the world as a teacher and performing artist. A giant on the Celtic and world music stage, with a totally winning personality as a bonus 🙂
For beginning Celtic trad fans, I’d recommend a deep dive into Alasdair Fraser’s discography because here we have several varieties and modifications of Scottish trad and its descendants; his entire output, both solo and all his many collaborations, is ”an introduction to…” material par excellence.
