Catherin Ann-MacPhee (SCO) is an actress and singer whose four studio albums (between 1987 and 2004) and one live album make up a remarkable treasure chest of genuine Gaelic song, arranged and recorded in a way that makes the songs truly shine.
Born and raised in the Isle of Barra, with Scottish Gaelic as her first language, she makes the tradition contained in the songs wonderfully alive through her completely natural and unforced delivery of these songs. Thankfully, the producers of these records had the good sense of not trying to forcefully modernize the material; sometimes a little synth maybe added for color but otherwise the artist is there accompanied by acoustic guitar, harp, fiddle and pipes, or by nothing at all, letting her voice and personality shine.
Catherine-Ann MacPhee’s recordings are not only atmospheric and enjoyable, they are also for a newcomer a great introduction and pathway to the Gaelic song tradition.
