Modern Breton folk music scene is really cool. Great bands and artists: Ampouailh, Startijenn, Sylvain Barou, Xavier Boderiou, Alain Pennec… I guess the great Breizh folk revival of the 1970′ and 80’s – Alan Stivell, Tri Yann, Kornog, Gwerz – laid the groundwork for the Breton folk music of 21st century.
The brand new album by Tangi Le-Gall Carré (Startijenn’s accordion guy) and singer Typhaine Corre is another good one from Bretagne, sung in Breton throughout, of course. I have learned that the album title means “The Light of a Thousand Stars” and that’s all I know of the lyrical content of the songs.
But it doesn’t matter since I dig the relaxed, colorful band sound, Typhaine’s voice and presence, Tangi’s excellent playing and the nicely varied songs, with many shades and vibes on the table here. I also like the way the music refuses to settle in one box, moving instead fluently between folk, chanson, world music and jazz.
This not necessarily an album I would sit down to listen with deep concentration but it definitely is one I would put on to bring some good vibes and grooves and moods in our home 😊
